Nearly two million people in the U.S. have the potentially blinding conditionmacular degeneration (also known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD). As the population ages, those numbers are projected to hit nearly 3 million by 2020.

Macular degeneration is the slow deterioration of cells in the macula of the eye. It compromises central vision, jeopardizing your ability to read, write, drive, and recognize faces.

There is a pervasive myth that a macular degeneration diagnosis inevitably leads to irreversible sight loss and that there are no effective treatments for AMD. In reality, people can take easy steps to prevent and even reverse the effects of macular degeneration.

Improved nutrition has been clinically shown to profoundly impact on the progression of AMD. Two compounds that are naturally found within the macula of the eye, lutein and zeaxanthin, can also be found in foods likespinach, kale, collard and mustard greens, broccoli, and corn. People can help prevent the deterioration of their eyesight and generally improve their vision health by eating these antioxidant rich foods.

In addition to choosing the right foods, it’s smart to stay away from activities that dramatically increase one’s risk of AMD, such as:

• Smoking: smokers are 200-300% more likely to develop AMD;

• Intake of harmful fats: man-made fats (a.k.a hydrogenated fats or transfats) and saturated fats double one’s risk of getting AMD;

• Alcohol consumption: drinking more than one glass of red wine per day has been linked to a reduction in glutathione, an essential compound that protects the cells of the eyes from damage and deterioration.

According to Natural Eye Care, Inc. founder, optometrist Marc Grossman “As always, prevention is the best medicine. Since less than one percent of people with AMD have progressed to the point of legal blindness, most are in a position to benefit greatly from preventative measures, particularly at the early stages of the disease.”

So, AMD is preventable but how is it treatable? My grandmother has AMD, has a healthy diet, never smoked but no one has given her any insights on how to treat AMD. Any thoughts?
